What's Special About Oktoberfest Beer?

It's that time of year again! The leaves are falling, the air is crisp, and Oktoberfest is just around the corner. For beer lovers, that means it's time to stock up on your favorite Oktoberfest beers. But what makes these beers so special? Read on to find out.

Oktoberfest beers are brewed in late spring and allowed to age until September or October. This evaluates to around six weeks of lagering, or cold conditioning. The end result is a smooth, malty beer with (generally) a lower alcohol content than other beers.

The most popular style of Oktoberfest beer is the Märzen. These beers get their name from the German word for March, when brewers would traditionally brew their strongest and highest-gravity beers. These brews would then be stored in cool caves or cellars over the summer months, to be consumed come autumn.

Nowadays, most Oktoberfest beers are of the Märzen style (with a few exceptions). But regardless of style, all Oktoberfest beers have one thing in common: they're brewed according to the Reinheitsgebot, or the German Purity Law. This law stipulates that only water, barley, and hops can be used in brewing beer - no additives or preservatives allowed!

The key difference between regular lagers and Oktoberfest beers is that they use a specific type of malt known as Vienna malt. This malt gives the beer a distinctive orange hue and imparts a slightly sweet flavor with notes of caramel. In addition, Oktoberfest beers are usually brewed with noble hops, which give the beer a slight bitterness and floral aroma. The overall result is a smooth, malty beer that is perfect for sipping on a cool autumn day.

Although we can drink any beer we want, certain beers and ales are especially suited for hot weather and as such are often seasonal in nature. In fact, because they are considered Summer beers, some are only available in late Spring and early Summer.

Fruit styles - Fruit beers are considered perfect for Summer fun. They tend to be light, crisp and flavorful. A Shandy is an example of a type of fruit beer. April 6: New Beers Eve

1920 – 1933 was the period of Prohibition in the United States. Thankfully in 1933 the government came to their senses. On this date in 1933, people lined up around the block at the doors of their favorite public house to prepare to imbibe the first legal brews in 13 years. Ever since that night, this day has been referred to as ‘New Beer’s Eve’, a precursor of ‘New Beers Day’.

April 7: National Beer Day (New Beers Day)

Today is the anniversary of the end of Prohibition in the United States. Every day is a good day for a beer, but today is special as it marks 88 years since beer and other alcoholic drinks have been again legally accessible to American citizens after 13 years during Prohibition. If you’re a beer drinker, just be thankful you weren’t alive in the years of 1920 – 1933! Celebrate this historic day in American history with a few beers from the Beer Trap!

April 11: King Gambrinus Day

King Gambrinus, also often called “The King of Beers”, learned how to brew beer from the Egyptian gods Iris and Osiris. The legend states that he sold his soul to the devil to become the first mortal brewer, then outdrank the devil when he came to collect. King Gambrinus once drank for three days and three nights at a banquet, and everyone was so impressed, they crowned him king. He lived to be 100 years old and it was said that he was buried in a beer barrel instead of a coffin. King Gambrinus will always be remembered as an icon of beer, brewing and joviality.

In addition to attending the traditional parade and dressing your best green apparel, and maybe making some special green shamrock cookies, this year you may surprise your guests with green beer. Yes, you don’t have to visit one of Boston’s best known Irish pubs to get green beer…

You can serve your very own mixture of green beer at home. It is very easy to mix, it glows with a festive hue, and best of all, coloring the beer green does not change it's natural flavor.

Actually, this is not a new idea. The story tells us that back around 1914, a doctor named Thomas H. Curtin made the green beer for a party at his New York clubhouse, and ever since, it has been successfully tried and enjoyed in many parties, many places and many pubs, being especially fun as another way to celebrate Saint Patrick’s Day.

Giving the beer a beautiful emerald hue is extremely easy and only takes a few minutes; also, it only requires 2 ingredients: Your favorite brand of Irish light-colored beer, and food coloring. The lighter color the beer, the easier you will obtain your favorite green hue.

Start with an empty pint glass, add a couple drops of green food coloring, then pour the selected light-color beer and gently stir. You may add more food-coloring one drop at a time, if you wish, until you reach the desired color. Don’t forget a special toast to honor Dr. Thomas H. Curtin.

Are Beers a Bit Hazy in Your Neighborhood?

Have you indulged in the haze craze? As you may have noticed, the new IPA in town is the Hazy IPA. In fact, Hazy IPA's have dominated craft brewing competitions for the past several years. One great thing about a Hazy IPA is that people who don’t enjoy classic IPAs can find themselves loving the taste of a Hazy IPA.

Visually, the difference between a Hazy IPA and a classic American-style IPA is the cloudiness that gives Hazy IPAs their name. If you’re a long-time IPA drinker, you’ve seen the rise of the Hazy IPA style. It’s grown from a niche interest to dominating beer shelves, while bringing in more future IPA fanatics. Whether you’re new to the style or already a fan, you may have wondered: What makes the haze hazy?

Most beer we drink tends to be filtered. Hazy IPAs skip the filtration step, leaving behind the extra goodness from the grain and hops. The careful planning of malt and hops, along with less filtering before packaging, yields a beer with lower perceived bitterness than other IPAs and hop character that’s decidedly fruity—you’ll often hear “juicy” as a flavor descriptor, like a tasty bite of ripe citrus. The popularity of Hazy IPA suggests it’s a welcoming style within craft beer.

With countless Hazy IPAs on store shelves, it’s no surprise their taste can vary greatly. Hazy IPAs are like a beautiful union of solid and liquid. The main component making up the haze in your IPA is grain protein. If you’ve ever had a wheat beer, you’ve probably seen haze there too. That’s because wheat has a much higher protein content than barley, the main ingredient in beer.

Along with grain protein from wheat and barley, there are solid compounds from hop oils and starch from oats if a brewer decides to use them. If a beer has fruit, fruit pectins might also add to the mix. These are all big, insoluble organic compounds, and with the right recipe, they’ll remain visible in the beer, instead of settling into a sediment.

While their haze is jam-packed with flavor, Hazy IPAs don't have higher alcohol content. Craft brewers target various ABV depending upon their vision for a recipe, from easy-drinking session beers to those that overwhelm your taste buds. The calories in a Hazy IPA, like any craft beer, largely come from carbohydrates and alcohol generated during brewing and fermentation. The yeast leave behind sugars they can’t break down. So the nutrition facts of a Hazy IPA depend on recipe design, namely the target alcohol content and how “fermentable” the grains are.

What makes Hazy IPAs appealing is that they tend to have a thick, satisfying taste from both the density and the extra solids and lower perceived bitterness. Hop aroma compounds also like to stick to those big organic compounds in the haze, which is why Hazy IPAs tend to pack such a powerful punch when it comes to flavor and aroma.

Take a Beer Adventure

You don't have to travel far to find adventure. If you know where to look, you can find adventure just about anywhere .

For some people, an adventure means going far away to some exotic place. They want to explore a place few dare to enter. For the rest of us, an adventure can be simpler than that. For instance, when I turn on my television or my computer, I can go just about anywhere. I don't have to leave my house. As much as I enjoy traveling, I'm just a happy staying home, going on other types of adventures.

For example, trying a new golf course or trying a new golf club can be an adventure. Any time I try a new driver or putter, that's an adventure. I don't now whether my ball will end up in the lake or the rough when I use a new driver for the first time on the golf course.

I've taken up cooking lately, so trying a new recipe for BBQ ribs for instance can be an adventure. When all is said and done, am I going to end up with a delicious rack of "fall off the bone" ecstasy, or a dry, half-burned BBQ disaster.

If there's one adventure I enjoy the most, it's probably when I explore a local beer distributor, to see what's new. I love experiencing the taste of a new beer or ale. When craft beers came on the scene nearly a decade ago, the beer world changed dramatically. It's so different from the world my dad or grandad knew. They both loved their beer, but their choices were few. They drank mostly tasteless lagers and pilsners, from age-old breweries. Most of those breweries don't even exist today.

My beer adventures give me great pleasure. There are so many choices and so many great beers. It's hard to make a bad choice. When I explore the stacks and shelves of beer at my local distributor, time slows down. I'm in no hurry. I don't want to miss anything.

I like IPA's... but I give other beers and ales a try as well. I usually start with a six pack to see whether I'll like it. If I find it's especially good, I'll give it try again the next time. For me, it's all about the taste. I like it cold, refreshing and mildly hoppy. When I find that holy grail of beers, it's been a successful adventure.

Every now and then, I find it.... that "Hole in One" beer. The perfect beer. For me though, the search is endless. Even after I find the perfect beer, I'm on the lookout for another one. And so the adventure continues. The very next time I enter the door of my neighborhood beer distributor, I wonder what will I find this time?
